End of year update
As 2012 draws to a close, the Community on Fetlar reflects on a memorable year. Only three weeks ago, we were celebrating the opening of the new pier and breakwater, a facility the community had been campaigning for for over 90 years. We look forward to the benefits, both economic and social which we are sure this facility will bring. We have welcomed a number of new families to the island, bringing our population up to 79 an almost 66% increase from our low point of 48 in early 2009. Fetlar General Merchants took on running the cafe, and by all accounts had a very successful year. The cafe is still operating in winter but only on Fridays 12-2pm. Fetlar Developments will also be welcoming 2 new staff onboard in 2013. Rhona Jackson, recruited through the Adopt an intern scheme, who will be working with FDL for 3 months assisting with developments to the website. Kyle Sylvester will be taking up his post as Fetlar Tourism Development Officer early in the new year as well. Our electric minibus "lang lippened" should be here in the early part of the year. A number of other projects are ongoing. 2013 is looking like an exiting year, so remember and keep checking back for the latest news. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
